On Sunday 11th February, AL ZAHIR won the HH The President Cup, Gr.1 PA, in Abu Dhabi.

AL ZAHIR is a 5yo son of Shadwell Arabian sire MADJANI, who won this race twice for HH Sheikh Hamdan.  Bred in France, AL ZAHIR joined HH Sheikh Hamdan’s stables in January 2017.  Trained by Ali Al Rayhi, AL ZAHIR won two Group 3 PA races that year: the Arabian Triple Crown Rounds 2 and 3 in Abu Dhabi.  He made his debut at Meydan on the dirt this season and finished 4th in a Conditions race and then in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (Gr.1 PA) on the 1st February.  He went back to Abu Dhabi and its turf track to score his first Group 1 victory last Sunday, ridden by Jim Crowley.

Richard Lancaster commented: “I was a little concerned after AL ZAHIR’s earlier runs this season. It looked as if he had not trained on. The switch back to the turf in Abu Dhabi where he won twice in Group 3 races last year made a great difference.

“He was enormously impressive on Sunday and pulled clear of a high class field to win by four and a half lengths. That was the performance of a top-class horse. Very reminiscent of his sire, MADJANI.”

Earlier this month, it was NO RISK AL MAURY who was in the spotlight with his first Group 1 winner: BARNAMAJ.  The Shadwell-bred five-year-old colt won the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (Gr.1 PA) over 2200m on the dirt track of Meydan.  It was his second start in the UAE, after the first round of the Al Maktoum Challenge (Gr.1 PA) in January when he lost by a neck to multiple Group 1 winner PADDY’S DAY.  They faced each other again on 1st February and BARNAMAJ prevailed by a head.  BARNAMAJ is trained by Ali Al Rayhi and was ridden on the day by Jim Crowley.

BARNAMAJ was born in France, at Haras de Saint Faust, out of a Shadwell-bred mare.  His dam, TASHREEFAT (by BENGALI D’ALBRET), was trained by Gill Duffield.  She won four races and finished second in the Liwa Oasis (Gr.1 PA) and third in the Al Ruwais (Gr.3 PA), twice.  She has produced five winners from five foals of racing age, including MURAAQIB (MUNJIZ), winner of six Group 1 PA races.

BARNAMAJ is from the first crop of his sire NO RISK AL MAURY.  He started his racing career in France, with François Rohaut.  He won his first race at three and finished third in the Group 2 PA French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge – Poulains in Toulouse later that year.  At four, he finished second in the Za’abeel International Stakes (Gr.1 PA) at Newbury and in the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Sprint (Gr.2 PA) in Toulouse.  He joined UAE-based trainer Ali Al Rayhi last December.

Richard Lancaster commented: “NO RISK AL MAURY was a remarkable racehorse and is proving himself as an outstanding sire.  We are very pleased to have bred his first Group 1 winner, out of a homebred mare by a Shadwell stallion, BENGALI D’ALBRET.  It is a great success for HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s breeding operation.”

Both stallions stand at Haras de Saint Faust and are available for natural cover or AI with frozen semen.
