Shadwell Arabian Stallion AL JAKBAR sired his first Group winner on 14th May at Newbury racecourse, on Lockinge Day. AGHSAAN, the only mare in the race, won the ARO Cup, Group 3 PA over a mile, in the colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

AGHSAAN made her debut in 2015 at Wolverhampton where she finished second. She then won for the first time at Hereford in June before claiming the first race of the day at Newbury, on Dubai International Arabian Races flagship event. She made a spectacular come back on Saturday to win her first Group victory.

It was also the first victory for trainer Philip Collington for HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum since he took up his license last September. He commented: “We are delighted to have trained the first Group winner for young stallion AL JAKBAR. AGHSAAN keeps improving and we have a few options for her this season. AL JAKBAR appears a promising sire, and his other progeny in training with us are very interesting prospects.”

AGHSAAN was ridden on the day by Tadhg O' Shea who commented: “she gave me a lovely feel throughout the race; she is very straightforward and has a great will to win. The best is yet to come; she could be a Hatta [International Group 1 PA] filly, as she has loads of class.”

French-bred, AL JAKBAR (a son of AL SAKBE) was trained by François Rohaut who always held him in high regard. AL JAKBAR won the French Arabian Breeders’ Cup Mile (Gr.1 PA) at Longchamp as a 4 year old.

AL JAKBAR is out of ESSAADA, dam of multiple Group performers such as BINT BELADY (Al Asayl Championship, Gr.3), ESSAANA (Prix Razzia III, Gr.3), TORNADOR (La Coupe Goffs, Gr.1) and SPEED TORNADE (Emaar International Stakes, Gr.2).

AL JAKBAR stands at Beech House Stud (Newmarket, UK).
