Shadwell Arabian Stallion AF AL BURAQ sired his first Group 1 winner on Thursday 28th February at Meydan, in the UAE when the six-year-old colt AF MAHER landed the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr.1 PA) over 2000m on the track’s dirt course.

It was the first attempt at Group level for the son of AF AL BURAQ who has shown remarkable consistency throughout his racing career, finishing in the first three in 19 of his 22 starts. Trained by Ernst Oertel and ridden by Tadhg O’Shea, AF MAHER carries the colours of his owner-breeder, Mr Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda. This team has achieved outstanding results this season as Ernst Oertel is currently the leading trainer in the UAE; Tadhg O’Shea is leading jockey and Mr Khalid Khalifa Al Nabooda is leading owner with 40 winners so far.

Shadwell Stud’s director Richard Lancaster commented: “AF AL BURAQ has joined our stallion roster recently and it is his second year standing at stud at Haras de Saint Faust (France). He has produced consistent, brave and tough horses that have performed incredibly well in the UAE. With a Group 2 victory two weeks ago with AF AL SAJANJLE in the Mazrat Al Ruwayah over a mile and this impressive win today over 2000m, we can see the potential and versatility of AF AL BURAQ’s offspring.

“We are looking forward to see his first crop of foals born in Europe and we are hoping that they will show the same ability on European racecourses as their elders do in the UAE.”

AF AL BURAQ was the leading sire in the UAE in 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. He sired stakes performers such as AF AL SAJANJLE, Mazrat Al Ruwayah (Gr.2 PA) in Meydan; AF AL HAZER, winner of the Arabian Triple Crown Round 1 (Listed PA) in Abu Dhabi and third of the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr. 1 PA) in Meydan; AF MAQAYES, winner of the Al Ruwais (Gr. 3 PA)  in Abu Dhabi, second of the Mazrat Al Ruwayah (Gr. 2 PA) in Meydan, third of the Liwa Oasis (Gr. 1 PA) in Abu Dhabi and of the Bani Yas (Gr. 2 PA) in Meydan; AF TAWAQ, second in the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 (Gr.1 PA) in Meydan…

AF AL BURAQ stands at Haras de Saint Faust (France) and is available for natural cover only.
